Each course of work begins with a psychological assessment — gathering details of current difficulties and relevant history, sometimes supported by questionnaires — to develop a thorough understanding of each client's problems and goals and to agree a plan for the way forward.
Dr Parkinson is trained in a range of evidence-based approaches, including CBT, behaviour therapy, systemic, solution-focused, mindfulness, DBT and narrative treatments, selecting the most appropriate method according to each client's needs and the current evidence base. She encourages clients to take an active role in a collaborative process, with an average course of treatment lasting around 8–10 sessions, and regularly works directly with parents.
She provides help for anxiety disorders (including phobias, social anxiety, separation anxiety, health anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, agoraphobia and panic disorder), OCD, PTSD and trauma reactions, depression, self-harm and low self-esteem, stress-related problems, anger and eating problems, and behavioural and parenting difficulties. Dr Parkinson is registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist, is a Chartered Psychologist, and is a member of the BABCP and the Association of Child Psychologists in Private Practice (AChiPPP).
